Wonderfully Random Milwaukee

Come along with TravelingJules as she discovers wonderfully RANDOM Milwaukee! Let's kick things off learning about letterpress print-making 🎨 at Bay View Printing Co, before heading to Foamation, where the iconic Cheeseheads are made. 🧀 Then, we say hi to the Bronze Fonz before stopping down at the Safehouse, a spy-themed restaurant with lots of surprises. 🕵🏻‍♀️ The tour would not be complete without a trip to the National Bobblehead Museum & Hall of Fame. We end the day with happy hour at Holler House, the oldest sanctioned bowling alley in the country. 🎳 What fun and oh so RANDOM in the best possible way! #satwMKE 📸

Fox Cities

We’re headed to the Fox Cities in Eastern Wisconsin in the Great Lakes Region, full of farm-to-table freshness and beautiful lakes, farm land, and other landscapes, and plenty of small town charm.

Ukwakhwa Farm

I hear Wisconsin is pretty GOURD-GEOUS this time of year. 😛

I captured this silly snap 📸 touring Ukwakhwa Farm, near the Fox Cities in Wisconsin. It was a nice change of pace. I learned how they plant, grow and harvest traditional and heirloom foods, and got to try some, too!

Just a little bit of muscle required for cornmeal mushing, one of the oldest frontier foods. We ground roasted corn by hand and created a type of porridge served for breakfast or as a side dish. Cool!

I was wowed by our picture perfect picnic lunch. What a pretty place to host a special event. I enjoyed the beautiful seasonal table settings and tasty dishes from Chef Elena Terry. Her nonprofit Wild Berries
@wild.beariesbrings ancestral foods to communities in a nurturing and nourishing way. Yum! 🙌

What an interesting and authentic farm to table experience. 💗 Would you like to join me next time?

Getting schooled on the good stuff—SAY CHEESE! When in Wisconsin! 🧀😉 #TravelWI, #WIHarvest

Even though you can find Wisconsin Cheese in 98% of the nation’s grocery stores, it’s even better coming straight from the source. I don’t think a day went by that I didn’t eat cheese curds—they’re like the gelatto of the Italy! 🤣 Whether you prefer the squeaky good kind or the melty deep fried kind, just can’t go wrong (unless you eat too many, LOL)!

Today I’m learning the fine art of aging and grading cheddar cheese, judging on key qualifications like color, flavor, body and texture, and aroma. We sample cheeses from Marieke Gouda @mariekegouda and 724 Wisconsin Select and Hook’s Cheese #hookscheese and more! Pretty fun to slow down and notice all the details that make cheese so yum. 🙌@americasdairyland#ProudlyWisconsin

Turns out I’m not very discerning, I like them all. But wow, there’s a lot to learn about the craft. Fun fact, Wisconsin has the only Master Cheesemaker Program outside of Europe, any takers?

While we’re entertaining our tastebuds, we sip on an Wisconsin Old Fashioned 🥃, made with bourbon. We’re sampling varieties from J Henry and Sons, made from an heirloom red corn. @jhenrybourbon But the big question is, do you like your Wisconsin old fashioned sweet or sour? 🤔

To top it all off, we do what the locals do—a Wisconsin Fish Fry. What a feast from @foodfightmadison who caters our special event at the Whiting Boathouse. I’m stuffed in the best way possible. 👊

Say Cheese!

Discovered a pretty nature place where the grass is as tall as me! 👀 #TravelWI, #WIHarvest

There’s plenty of interesting flora and fauna here in Appleton, where Wisconsin’s Northern and Southern biological communities meet. We met the sugar maple tree (the state tree) and learned how maple syrup is made. Mmm, smells soooooo good, the sugar shack is where it’s at!

Interestingly sap only has 2-3.5% sugar content when it comes out of the tree, but after the boiling process, the sugar content rises to 66%! Did you know Wisconsin ranks fourth in the United States for maple syrup production? 🍁 COOL!

Thennnnn…a marvelous multi-course meal, showcasing the most delicious native ingredients—bison, cranberries, maple syrup! Round of applause for Chef Nick Morse of RYE Appleton @ryeappleton and Chef Gregory Leon of Amilinda in Milwaukee @amilindamke,@chefgregleon for this magical and memorable foodie experience. Yum! Bubolz is such a great place to host a special event. 🙌
